Open Letter from a Rajya Sabha MP to Sachin Tendulkar

The nomination of Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha has caused a fair amount of anguish across the country. Here’s a letter from an anonymous Rajya Sabha member to the master explaining this.

Dear Sachin,

Till a few days back no one really cared for what was going on in the Rajya Sabha. Barring hyped up LokPal type debates, hardly did the average citizen care for our activities. However, since your nomination I have found that there is a new found concern for the Rajya Sabha. I thank you for this. Never before, have I seen such anxiety in the Indian pubic for the affairs of its Upper House. There are currently 240 of us in the Rajya Sabha. But the only questions regarding us members seem to revolve around how Sachin Tendulkar will make a meaningful contribution in the house. And all this even before you’ve attended a day of parliament!

No one cares for these two!

By this stage in your life, you must be used to the different yardsticks used to judge you. No one in the country really cares if the Javed Akhtars and Jaya Bacchans of the Rajya Sabha continue to pursue their careers parallel to being parliamentarians. No one really cares if Vijay Mallya continues to oversee a multi-million dollar empire along with being a parliamentarian.  However, you Sachin, you dare not think of continuing with your cricketing career along with being an MP. More interestingly, no one is bothered if the 2 other members nominated along with you (Rekha & Anu Aga) are any good. There has been no discussion on the intellect of Rekha or the oratory style of Anu Aga. All opinions and comments have been reserved for you.

Throughout your professional career (which for you is throughout your life) people have asked you about why you have not taken a stand on societal issues. This despite the fact that even innocuous gestures or utterances from you in the past, have been blown into huge controversies. Anything from cutting a cake to stating that you are an Indian has offended someone and been politicized. Now when you have taken this step to join the Rajya Sabha and be in a strong position to influence reform, you are again being doubted and questioned. I do not envy your position.

Some of the most interesting critiques of your entry to the Rajya Sabha have been based on your quiet and non-confrontational demeanour. This fascinates me. There are close to 800 members of parliament in both houses combined. The average citizen would struggle to recount the names of even 20 of these parliamentarians. Yet, it has been assumed that all 800 are loud, boisterous and supremely articulate communicators. This is obviously not true. Every member has his own strengths and in that aspect you are second to none. Let me assure you, there are few people in the world (let alone parliamentarians) who have inspired generations and united millions as you have through cricket. And this is precisely why you have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha. You do not represent any constituency or state. You do not represent an electorate that voted you in. You represent the diversity that nominated members are supposed to bring into the Rajya Sabha and you are unquestionably distinguished enough to do so.

Being a nominated member of parliament, you currently do not represent any political party. However, legally you are entitled to join a political party of your choice over the next six months. Sadly, if you do decide to do so (irrespective of the party you join), you will again have to face the ire of India’s ‘public’. You must remember, that most of this country thinks that it owns you. Almost everyone capable of speaking to the press has laid out what is ‘’expected’’ from Sachin Tendulkar once he is in the Rajya Sabha. One of these ‘’expectations’’ is for you to remain non-political. Now why anyone apart from you should have a say in that is beyond me. But Sach is your life, you are a national obsession and every step you take or word you utter will continue to be scrutinized and dissected.

Sincerely,

Your Well Wisher from the Rajya Sabha

P.S – My colleague wants to know when you will ask your 100th question in the parliament.

  2. very shameful act done by sachin.
how he can join rajsabha with support of congres.
    whole country oppose congres.
    we r on against corruption.
so request sachin plz plz don’t join congres…

    1. @71d9c2a5f0a68ba99eb828578dc22b1f:disqus  The only shameful thing on this page is your comment. He hasn’t joined the Congress. Even if he does, that’s his free will. Now that maybe a concept beyond your comprehension since in your dream world ‘whole’ country has the same political affinity.

  3. Good move by Govt in nominating Sachin Tandular to RAJYA SABHA, hope he will look after the interest of sports persons (both sex) in parliament, rather surprised some people are criticizing the move, God knows why these people are opposing i.e. nominated by Congress Govt, if he has been nominated by BJP, it would have O.K.

  4. Do this  system really bothers about the upper hose as much as lower house. where does Vidhan Parishad of states gone? Allthough B.R. Ambetker and his team have created these upper houses to bring in expertise of different fields to carry out a fruitful use of constitutional system. This system proved Mr. Bhim Rao Ambetker true by not being good people to handle the best of the constitution written.

Hope Sachin Tendulker, Rekha, and Annu Aga can contribute a little more than Jaya Bachchan or Shabana Asmi! But the main problem is selection procedure. Why anybody require support of any political party for being nominated by President of India. Even the president’s election is also contaminated due to involvement of political parties. Its high time that we start giving importance to Individual’s Human Resources and its patriotic capability to contribute for nation. For this we must have to look for people with not only special talent, also having good leadership skills. Insted of Sachin Tendulker, Mr. Sunil Gavasker / Mr. Kapil Dev Nikhanj can have been the best choice. Because

    1. They are not playing now2. They are proven good leaders in their field.
    3. They are of the age to use their expertise in politics as new field.
