The country is going through a phase where the internet is fast becoming an integral part of political discourse. Here’s a comparative analysis of some of the politicians whom we have searched for on Google over the last one year. 

‘Google Search Trends‘ allows anyone to analyze search terms entered by internet users of a country over a specific time period. Here are some of the country’s top netas  that have been analyzed:

 Of the lot, the ‘Gandhis’ and Modi are typically at the centre of most national level political discussions. Over the last few months, Arvind Kejriwal has often been portrayed as a political player who is at the forefront of using the internet to woo the citizenry. The US presidential elections were closely followed by India’s internet audiences. Hence Barack Obama is included on this list. And Behenji Mayawati is included because she is loved and adored by millions across the land.

So which of these politicians was googled the most over the last one year in India?

Of the search-terms analyzed, the Gandhis and Modi account for almost three-fourths of searches. This popularity isn’t necessarily a good thing. For instance, many of the searches for Modi could be attributed to Godhra and many of the searches for the Gandhis could be related to the poor governance that they have been providing for the last decade.

Kejriwal was a far more popular googling choice than Behenji and so was President Obama. However, to put this into perspective with the overall popularity of politicians in general, let’s see what happens when MS Dhoni is introduced into the equation. If we replace Behenji with Dhoni, the results change completely. Dhoni was searched for on google many more times than any of the netas analyzed. The search terms analyzed for Dhoni were: dhoni+ms dhoni+dhoni sakshi.

Dhoni was almost as popular as the Gandhis and Modi put together. But there is one person against whom even MS Dhoni falls way short. Sunny Leone, was the most searched personality in India last year. The search terms analyzed for Leone were sunny leone+sunny leone videos+hot sunny leone. If we introduce Sunny Leone into the picture and replace Barack Obama with her, it becomes evident as to how popular a google search she truly was last year.

The Gandhis + Modi + Kejriwal + Dhoni all combined were only about one-third as popular as Sunny Leone was just by herself. So maybe the netas need to back off a bit when it comes to discussing their mass popularity. The true champion is a Canadian-born former porn star of Indian decent, whose body of work includes the movies Busty Cop Part 2 and  Libon Costumed Damsels in Distress.
