Quiz: How well do you know the ‘other’ India?

Highland Village India is poised to be an economic super-power (at least that’s what we’ve been told) and is expected to become the third largest economy by 2030. For decades, we have been obsessed with GDP and economic growth. What we don’t seem to track and measure as diligently, is basic human development. How does India perform at indicators that look at stuff like access to healthcare, education, nutrition etc? Most of us in urban bubbles couldn’t care less (because we can pretty much pay out-of-pocket for literally everything). But a vast majority of the country is at the mercy of government infrastructure and systems. Here’s a quiz to help you explore this in more detail:

Your answers are highlighted below.
Question 1
These twenty countries (G20) represent the major economies of the world. True of False: India ranks 20th (worst) in all these indicators of maternal and child healthcare:
  1. Maternal mortality ratio (mothers who die per 100 000 live births)
  2. Infant mortality rate (probability of dying between birth and age 1 per 1000 live births)
  3. Under-five mortality rate (probability of dying by age 5 per 1000 live births)
A
True
B
False
Question 1 Explanation:
Most of India's indicators are so bad that they are not even comparable to other G20 countries (apart from South Africa). For instance, India's Infant Mortality Rate is 37.9. In 17 of the 20 countries, this rate is <15. It's the same story for other indicators. The size of our population only adds to the problems. In India, there are about 45,000 maternal deaths every year. For the other 19 countries, the combined figure is around 16,500. So maybe we should stop our obsession with linking the country's progress to GDP growth - far more fundamental issues need to be fixed. Like actual humans who die at a rate that is shameful. ************************************************************** You can access the WHO data on this link to learn more http://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.home
Question 2
What is the average monthly income of a farming household (~ 5 people) in India ?
A
Rs 20,000 per month
B
Rs 10,000 per month
C
Rs 7,500 per month
D
Rs 6,500 per month
Question 2 Explanation:
As per the National Sample Survey Office’s findings for 2013/14, the average income of a farm household was Rs. 6,426 per month . Which means an average per-capita income of around Rs. 1,300 per person for a family of five. This is one of the main factors of India's agrarian crisis. Farmer incomes have remained stagnant, while the costs associated with farming have been steadily rising - largely due to corporations gouging small farmers. The occasional loan-waiver is not going to fix anything - nor will our political leaders holding fasts or talking about progress. ************************************************ Source: http://www.thehindu.com/data/does-it-pay-to-be-a-farmer-in-india/article6713980.ece
