Thank you Smriti Irani. The country was confused and in a precarious situation before your enthralling performance in parliament yesterday. But today we all have a clearer understanding of how to live our lives.
For whatever reasons, university students thought that they can espouse opinions that differ from those of the government. For too long, we have allowed universities to be venues of active social debate where students are exposed to different opinions. Every democratic country in the world has been guilty of this. Thankfully, we can now proudly say, that we recognize the threat posed by students in universities. We need to nip dissent against the government in the bud. And what better way to do this than mute student groups at universities. This is why it was so critical for BJP MLA Bandaru Dattatreya to write to you about the ‘anti-national’ politics on in Hyderabd University.

A student group once again, dared to protest an action taken by the government. Thankfully, the police and even random groups of lawyers were present to teach them a lesson. We can and must justify anything in the name of protecting our national pride. All of us Indians need to understand that we are dealing with a dichotomy. We are either Indian. Or we are ‘Anti-national Pakistan-loving Commies’. It is not possible to be Indian and hold an opinion against the Indian state, because that would make too much sense.
You almost puked when you spoke about Mahishasur Martyrdom Day and about students protesting in favour of Kashmir’s independence. You made it clear, that we cannot and will not even contemplate a narrative or viewpoint that is against what the majority believes in. This is a perfect stance for us to carry into all areas of society. Let us remain one of the few countries where homosexuality is illegal and where women are forced to aspire to be Tulsis. More importantly, you reinforced that Kashmir is a piece of real-estate that we won. And every ‘Indian’ has a right to stake claim to this piece of land and we can continue to scoff at every argument against this notion.
Over the past couple of years, we have successfully made bigotry a virtue. And together, we can and shall keep harping on a narrative of India that is comfortable and convenient. And any opinions that make us uncomfortable, we will just deem them to be seditious in nature.

In the context of her speech she mentioned everything but never ventured into answering why BJP wants to form government with the PDP?For example, her speech didn’t make clear why the BJP, which is so passionate about Afzal Guru, got into an alliance with the PDP in Jammu and Kashmir for power. The PDP’s position on the hanged terrorist is clear and i quote “He was not a terrorist and his hanging was a gross miscarriage of justice.” When you implicitly accept this position by aligning with the party in that state, how can you brand students who raise slogans in favour of Guru elsewhere as traitors?
She brazenly did not answer as to why so much interest on a letter against the Hyderabad student Rohith? The constant reminders are unexpected and unheard of from HRD Ministry.Again, it’s not unusual for MPs and ministers to send letters to ministries to get work — often of a personal nature — done. How many of them are pursued as vigorously as in the case of Rohith Vemula? And how many of them result in such punitive action from the authorities? Moreover, her speech does not explain the compelling necessity for her party to claim that he was not a Dalit.

Nothing wrong with celebrating Mahishasur Martyrdom Day. But when you couch it in fair and beautiful Durga killing a dark skinned native leader Mahishasur, then you are forced to puke at the level of perversion people use to further divide Indians. Only for their politics. Disgusting!
Sure. But no one is forcing us to celebrate Mahishasur Martyrdom Day. Why the anger? Why should we only be tolerant of mythological tales that suit the majority’s senses? Why is our HRD minister so dismissive of a viewpoint held by a few?
